What classes/subclasses/races would you allow in a 5e Yoon-Suin campaign and why?

I think all the classes would fit into Yoon-Suin, but almost none of the races.
ReplyDeleteDwarves and Humans, obviously, and that makes it easy enough to accept halflings and gnomes, if one wants some variation. Homebrew Slugmen and Crabs. I kinda feel like Yuan-Ti and Kenku might fit into the cosmopolitan vibe.
But I'd avoid the Tolkein races and the modern D&D races, like Dragonborn. Then it just starts to feel like D&D in fancy dress, instead of its own corner of the world.
Has anyone homebrewed slugs and crabs?
I’m looking to run a somewhat understated version with humans only. Variant humans to be sure. Just a concept more than anything. More interested in the different ethnic & cultural aspects coming through. With no “Monster” or non-human races. No matter what they’re all people.

ReplyDeleteI like the idea that Yoon Suin slug men are mechanically identical to humans.
ReplyDeleteYoon Suin with all the combat focus of 5e would feel quite different. I would be tempted to just allow the fighter and the less combat focused characters (Thief, Wizard, Bard, Ranger)
I think you’d need some clerics, at least for the Slugmen. I’m not sure Barbarians and Paladins fit the setting. I’d be tempted to limit Warlocks to the Slugs (the celestial, fiendish, and old ones only). In fact, to distinguish Slugmen from humans, you might say all Slugs and only slugs are warlocks. Maybe Warlocks and Bards.

ReplyDeleteYou could use Tiefling but they'd need a major reskin, same with Half Orcs. I'm thinking either of those, with serious reskin, would work well as some kin to the Asura. In modern D&D terms they'd lean toward chaotic neutral, not evil, drawing inspiration from the imagery of the passionate and wild Asura of myth.
ReplyDeletePhysically they would look humanoid but exceedingly feral and alien: brightly colored skin, eyebrows and hair spiking up like a Dragon Ball Z character (the super saiyan design draw inspiration from Buddhist warrior/protector deities) and sharp teeth and nails. They'd have wild markings and tattoos but wouldn't fall into the pit of 'stupid orcs': they'd be as smart as human for the most part but their entire life view is one purely driven by passion safe for the few odd Monks found in their race, seeking enlightenment.
